Effect of Different Types of Mulches on Emergence, Growth and Yield of Potato Crop (Solanum tuberosum L.)

Baljinder Singh, Gurjinder Singh

Abstract

Field experiment was conducted at Guru Kashi University research farm, Punjab, India with four replications during rabi 2016; the experiment has five treatments. Mulching has very positive effect on the emergence of plant; in the treatment T1 the emergence was recorded maximum, i.e. 35 and 45 days after planting, highest emergence was 79% and 97.5%, respectively and the emergence percentage in other treatment was less as compared to T1. Growth rate also was better in all the treatments where mulching was applied as compared to control, at 60 days after planting; maximum growth rate (64.25%) was recorded in T1, followed by 53.25% in T2 and lowest (36.50%) in T5. Similarly, at 75 days after planting, all treatments where mulching was applied, were found significantly different than control. Mulching has also a significant effect on yield of potato crop. In the treatments where mulching was done with plastic sheet (black or white), yield was more than the other mulches. However, highest yield 19.00 t/ha was recorded in T1, followed by 17.00, 16.50, 14.75 and 11.00 t/ha in T3, T2, T4 and T5, respectively.
