Study of Rainfall According to Rainy Nakshatra

Swami Chandrashekhar P.

Abstract

Most of the Indian farmers used to plan their agriculture work in accordance with eleven rainy nakshatras. It is necessary to verify which rainy nakshatra is more reliable to all farmers. This paper focuses on the study of rainfall under rainy nakshatras. This analysis will provide useful information for water resources planner and farmers to assess the availability of water and create the storage accordingly. The scientific results and the analysis covered the way to determine the proper onset and withdrawal of monsoon results which were used for land preparation and sowing. Rainfall data has been collected for the duration 1979 to 2017. During data collection, two regions were considered for the study of rainfall analysis as dam region and non-dam region. For achieving the objective, statistical tools such as goodness of fit, time series analysis, etc. were used. The mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of nakshatra-wise rainfall data was calculated to check the rainfall variability. From the calculated results, the rainfall pattern was found to be erratic. Lognormal distribution was identified the best fit probability distribution based on Chi-square test for goodness of fit. For some nakshatras, Gumbel max distribution was more appropriate as compared to lognormal distribution. Pushya nakshatra at dam region, Hasta nakshatra at non-dam region were found to be most consistent among all eleven rainy nakshatras, and Hasta nakshatra is useful to farmers for growing crops.
