Social Aspects for Coastal Land Zoning and Present Livelihood Status of Maheshkhali Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Abstract

As per 2011 census, the total population of Maheshkhali Upazila is 3, 21,218 of which 1, 65, 693 are male and 1,55,525 are female. The population density is 887 per Sq. Km and literacy rate 30.8%. There are 400 cottage industries which are leading in the industrial sector in this Upazila. Additionally, there are 160 wooden furniture stores, 152 rice mills (auto and semi-auto), 150 handloom, 150 tailoring shops, 100 dying facilities of handloom industries, 100 dry fish processing, 70 bamboo and cane industries, 50 husking craft mills, 50 handy, 50 potteries, 25 bakeries, 20 flour mills, 14 saw mills and 03 salt processing factories are notable industries in this Upazila. Events of Palagan, Kabighan, drama, Kritton, Zatragan and religious gathering are being organized occasionally. A total of 430 mosques, 25 temples, 07 pagoda, 20 libraries, 20 sports clubs, 50 cultural clubs, 01 Science club and 02 other social clubs are in this Upazila. Popular tourist spots of this Upazila are Adinath Temple, Mainak Hill, Sonadia Island and Keyang of the Rakhain.
