A Study on the Hydrophytes and Halophytes of Nal Sarovar and Chhari Dhand Wetlands of Gujarat, India
Abstract
Abstract
A seasonal study was conducted during 2016–2017 on the species composition, species richness and habitat-wise distribution of the hydrophytes and halophytes of Nal Sarovar and Chhari Dhand, two natural, shallow and seasonal wetland of Gujarat, located in two different biogeographic zones, viz., semi-arid (Zone-4) and arid (Zone-3) respectively. A total of 15 species of hydrophytes and 7 species of halophytes were recorded from the two wetlands. Of these, 13 species of hydrophytes and 5 species of halophytes were recorded in Nal Sarovar and 7 species of hydrophytes and 5 species of halophytes were recorded in Chhari Dhandh. Most of the hydrophytes were submerged and only one was free-floating. The predominant association was Chara-Najas-Fimbristylis and Fimbristylis-Cyperus in Nal Sarovar and Chhari Dhandh respectively. In the case of halophytes, most of the species were shrubs and no specific association was noticed.
