In Vitro and In Vivo Screening on Anti-diabetic Properties of Hemidesmus indicus in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rat Model
Abstract
The aim of the present study is to investigate the anti-diabetic potential of Hemidesmus indicus Linn. R. root extract in Alloxan induced diabetic rat. In phytochemical analysis most of the metabolites in the root extract was noticed such as Anthraquinones, flavonoids, phenols, steroids and proteins. In vitro alpha amylase inhibition assay shows significant percentage of inhibition (14.58%, 22.92%, and 45.83%) with increasing concentration of extracts (0.01 ml, 0.1 ml and 0.5 ml). In vivo anti-diabetic assay on adult Sprague-Dawley diabetes induced rat using Hemidesmus indicus root extracts shows maximum reduction in glucose level when compared with metformin administrated rats.
