Abstract

ABSTRACT
Plants are used in modern medicine where they occupy a very significant place as raw material for important drugs. The present study deals with the phytochemical screening, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of chloroform and aqueous leaf and stem extracts of Mimusops elengi. In antimicrobial studies, for optical density method the chloroform extract showed more inhibition and zone for well diffusion in case of Streptococcus mitis compared to other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antioxidant assays were also performed. The phenol assay and the thin-layer chromatography confirmed the presence of phenolic compound. Thus, the extract having the antioxidative property can be used for the formulation of leaf decoction for treatment of dental problems. The natural herbs are harmless as they do not have any side effects, with low mammalian toxicity and can be handled safely.
