Abstract

Blue-green algae are one of the important organisms having different ecological and economic important properties and are among one of the least explored one. The major difficulty is met with their exact identity; this could be tackled to an extent with the use of molecular techniques. Isolation of high quality DNA is essential for molecular biology applications. In the present study an efficient protocol for the extraction of genomic DNA from cultured samples of Nostoc and Anabaena collected from different districts of Kerala is developed. The DNA was found suitable for PCR amplification. The A260/280 of the isolated DNA was found to be 1.5–1.8 indicating their purity.
