Possible Ionospheric Precursors to Magnitude 6.6, 6.8 and 6.5 Earthquakes near Port Hardy, Canada on 22nd October, 2018

Abstract

On October 22nd, 2018 a series of three large magnitude earthquakes hit areas near Vancouver island of Canada. According to USGS, the earthquakes were shallow with depths of epicenter ranging at around 10 Km. This paper demonstrates possible anomalous changes in the ionospheric parameters like VTEC, foF2, hmF2 in the ionosphere around areas hit by the earthquake a few days prior to the earthquake. These anomalous changes may be treated as ionospheric precursors for strong and shallow earthquakes.

Keywords : Ionosphere, Earthquake precursors, VTEC,foF2,hmF2,IGS, GNSS,IZMIRAN.
