Abundance of the Sleeper Fish Eleotris vittata from the New Calabar River, Port Harcourt, Nigeria

Chukwu O.K.

Abstract

Abundance of Eleotris vittata from the New Calabar River was studied over a period of twelve months. The study was necessitated from the unavailability of data on the species/stock in the water body. Stock abundance estimated by catch per unit effort recorded an increased catch in the dry season (55.42%) over the wet season (44.58%), the observation was similar for the sexes; males (22.72% for dry season, and 13.42% for wet season) while females recorded 33.20% in the dry and 30.67% for the wet season. The months of August and September which constituted the peak of the wet season had zero catch. Analysis of sex ratio showed that the population was female dominated. There was significant correlation between physiochemical parameters and catch.
