Insights of Buffalo Genetic resources of India and their characteristics

Abstract


It is believed that the buffalo domesticated in India are the descendants of Bos arnee buffaloes, which still exists in wild type in the North-Eastern parts of India. India is home track to best riverine buffalo breeds in the world namely Murrah, Jaffarabadi, Nili-Ravi, Surti, Mehsana, Bhadawari etc which are the main stay of the dairy industry in India. The buffalo plays a crucial role for overall food security of our nation by contributing 49% of total milk production and 23% of meat production in India. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to safeguard and conserve the rich diversity of Indian buffalo breeds. Conservation strategies need to be framed for endangered buffalo breeds, so that we can maintain the genetic diversity in Indian buffalo breeds.
