The ICT-driven Technical Education in India: An Evaluation of Project NPTEL

Abstract


The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning or commonly known as NPTEL is a project initiated by several Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science and funded by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. Launched in 2003, it creates curriculum material pertaining to higher education covering science and technology. It provides freely accessible multimedia material for technical education. With the Indian economy growing at a fast pace, NPTEL aims to cater to the growing need of technically trained professionals throughout the country. This paper traces the various aspects of NPTEL such as evolution, course and content distribution, growth since the implementation of the project and analysis of the NPTEL website.
