Abstract

Paint production and application is very important in material science and technology in terms of conservation, sustainability as well as socio-economic impacts. Therefore, the basic knowledge of paint production, properties and application will be of gainful academic and practical impact to the society. Paint constituents typically include binders, pigments, carrier solvents, and functional additives, and the basic functions and chemistry of these constituents were discussed in this review paper. Furthermore, classifications of paint based on solvent carrier, and some functional paints such as; anticorrosion, thermal-resistant and fire-retardant, scratch/abrasion-resistant, self-cleaning, antibacterial, antifouling and nano-polymer paints, as well as paint failure were discussed. The aim of this paper is to constitute a handy article on the basic science and technology of paint production and application in such a concise presentation that is amenable to teaching, learning and practical purposes.
