Understanding the Process and Delivery of MOOC and E-Learning: A Case Study of MOOCs on SWAYAM Platform in India

Abstract


Online learning is one of the new measures taken by the Indian government. To bring large number of population on a new platform of learning through innovative pedagogy is changing the future of education scene in India. This empowers both the learner and the teacher through blended learning with interactive pedagogical tools. Education in digital platforms has become collective and collaborative learning practices to make it less oppressive, where the learner's knowledge is also equally respected. The author has pioneered in developing and delivering of the two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on study webs of active learning for young aspiring minds (SWAYAM) platform. This study is an attempt to provide technicalities of the process and delivery mechanisms. Though, the digital educational initiative has potential to develop a new process of learning, it is not free from challenges at every phase. This study is presented from the teacher’s perspective to give the overall understanding of the developing MOOCs, issues and challenges in delivery mechanism. For the purpose of analysis, case study method is employed. The study is based on the experiences gained after running the two courses namely, introduction to audio-visual media and advertising and public relations on SWAYAM platform. Study has dealt with the learner’s anxieties and pedagogical dilemmas. The outcome of the case studies has presented the predictive future of the MOOCs and readiness required by the academicians and educational institutions.
