Usage of E-Newsletters among Ophthalmologists in India: An Opinion Survey

Abstract

E-newsletter is an electronic bulletin, issued periodically to the members of a society or to a specific group of the society. Ophthalmic E-newsletter sites help the ophthalmologists to keep updated in their field and sharpen their skills. The main aim of the study is to get more insights about the usage of E-newsletter sites among the ophthalmologists. A survey method is used to obtain the opinion from ophthalmologists on their usage of e-newsletters. 633 ophthalmologists working in 47 academic eye hospitals from 16 states of India were included in the study. The multi-response question about the E-newsletter usage among ophthalmologists was analysed by finding out the popular E-newsletter and then identifying the pattern of the E-newsletter usage. The statistical relationship between the E-newsletter usage and ophthalmologists and institution characteristics were examined with the help of t-test and ANOVA. The study examines the popularity of the E-newsletter sites. The study results revealed that “Ophthalmology Update” was the most used E-newsletter among ophthalmologists, which holds 47.87%. This popularity may be based on the site content, technology behind the site, user friendliness of the site, quality of information, etc. Majority of the ophthalmologists use single E-newsletter which is about 72.35%. The E-newsletter site usage pattern of ophthalmologists reveals the support and loyalty of ophthalmologists towards the E-newsletter sites they are using There is a significant difference between the E-newsletters usage with working experience. The ophthalmic libraries and information community should provide information about the existing E-newsletter sites to the ophthalmologists. The libraries can subscribe to E-newsletter and provide a repository to the ophthalmologists.
