Developing Metadata Schema for Traditional Medicinal Knowledge (TMK) from Maharashtra, India

Priyamwada Pramod Joshi

Abstract

Around hundred indigenous communities are there in Maharashtra. For their day to day activities they make use of traditional knowledge. Many of them are using their Traditional Medicinal Knowledge (TMK) for curing different disease. Due to benefits of this TMK, many have started to collect, recording, storing and documenting it into a digital format. There is no specific metadata schema for describing digital data of TMK. There are many metadata formats to describe TMK. These differences of metadata schema will make the process of documenting, managing and disseminating the TMK difficult. This work attempted to overcome this problem. Metadata development methods, such as domain analysis, derivation analysis, system-centric analysis, user-centric analysis and resource-centric analysis are used to develop specific metadata schema for TMK. These methods are selected based on literature review result toward research articles that presented about metadata development. This paper proposed metadata schema of TMK which consists of 49 metadata elements which are categorized into 6 metadata sections, i.e., supporting data, material, supporting tool, success story, knowledge source, and knowledge engineer.
