Strategic Library Automation: A Practical Approach

Abstract


Library automation is not new in the library and information science discipline these days; however particularly in India it is not much practiced on the ground reality. Library automation deals with automating the library services that are performed by human beings. Computerized data management and application of information and communication technology (ICT) are intrinsic parts of library automation. Sometimes, computerization is synonymously used with automation in the context of library management, but automation is a broader term as compared to the earlier one. In present paper, it is discussed how a library should be transformed/upgraded in to an automated environment/a higher level of automation. In this process, some strategic such as, Know Your Library (KYL), Know Your User (KYU), Wise Selection of software and hardware, library database management (LDBM) library database verification (LDBV), IT-enabled user relationship management (IT-eURM), etc. are suggested.
