Abstract

The present study is an attempt to assess the research output of selected fundamental research institutes on basic sciences situated in West Bengal. Since the Government of India and several government agencies of scientific research are trying to accelerate the growth of research activities in the field of basic sciences, this study is expected to assist the evaluation of research performance of these institutes. The bibliometric analysis for the period 2006–2015 of the research publications has been performed using the Science Citation Index-Expanded database. This work measures both quantitative and qualitative aspects of research output. The study includes total and comparative analysis of the five institutes based on year-wise distribution of publications, most prolific institutes in terms of research publications, quality of journals where these outputs have been published with the means of impact factor and composite indicator as h-index. The results indicate that research publications from all the institutes are consistently increasing and mean journal impact factors of the publications of all the institutes also have an upward trend during the period of study. A rise in the quantity as well as quality of research output from these institutes is thus observed. It has also been found that the h-index for all the institutes is fluctuating in nature.
