Gender Differences in Job Satisfaction among Indian Library Professionals and Influential Factors

Abstract


Job satisfaction is essential for the efficient performance in an organization. It is very much in-evitable in-service oriented professions such as library. Women have traditionally made up the majority of library profession. India is rich in both natural resources and human power and has fastest growing economies in the world, but the employees in organization of India are not completely satisfied with their job. In India, very few research works have been carried out on job satisfaction of library professionals so far. Hence this study is to examine the gender differences in the job satisfaction level among library professionals of various universities in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu state and to ascertain influential factors. Major findings and implications of this study is summarized as follows. First, this study found that various factors such as decision making, library infrastructure and collection development, nature of service, salary, and job challenge influence job satisfaction. Second, this study found that most of the respondents have job satisfaction in all other dimensions except their salary and job challenge. Third, this study revealed that, though female library professional enjoys their job than their male counterparts, in-equality exists in salary, opportunities for promotion, adequate training after joining the job. This study had made important contributions to the literature on gender in-equality, as well as steps to improve job satisfaction of library professionals.
