Abstract

Abstract
The paper aims to examine the level of awareness about Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) among library users and reveal the impact of the same on various library procedures performed by users in library. To address the research objectives articulated in this study various departments from the faculty of science, University of Kashmir were selected on randomly in order to study the level of awareness about RFID technology. The survey method based on questionnaire was applied to reveal the impact of the same technology on students. A 15 item, closed-ended questionnaire was distributed amongst 80 Students. However, only 56 students returned the filled questionnaire, thus the response rate is equal to 70 percent. The students cite many features for using RFID like there is no checking while leaving the library, Self-Issue/Return, save their time, easy access to information and self-checking of personal records. In enhancing patron experiences libraries should conduct training and orientation programmes. This study arrives at conclusion that most of the student learnt to operate RFID by themselves, followed by friends/colleagues and library staff and found it more interactive than barcode technology. The paper provides an insight about future processes to enhance the use of this technology in libraries and how it aids users to carry out routine based library procedures. The study takes into account how and what the users perceive of RFID technology and its impact on day to day procedures and activities carried out by patrons in libraries.
