Profile of Research Publications in Medicine: Study of Jordanian Medical Institutes
Abstract
The present study has been undertaken to explore the Jordanian medical science research output indexed in Scopus database during the last five decades. A total of 11106 documents were found using ‘Subjarea’ and ‘Affilcountry’ of the Scopus as search fields. The research output in Jordan is mainly produced through journal articles and reviews in medical sciences. The five-year interval from 2016-2020 is having highest number of publications while as the 2011-2015 interval has received maximum citations per publication. Only 12.25% of publications are written by single authors, while the rest are produced by more than one author, representing high research collaboration trend in Jordanian medical science research. Khader, Y.S. from Jordan University of Science and Technology is the most prolific author followed by Alzoubi, K.H. from the same university. It is found that the higher contributed institutes have more prolific authors. The United States has been the most collaborative country of Jordan followed by United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The Jordanian collaboration reflects trend of more collaboration with European countries than middle east countries. Around 70% of the literature is being published by Jordan University of Science and Technology, The University of Jordan, and King Hussein Cancer Centre. So far as the highly cited articles are concerned, the global collaborated projects like Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are having more citations and published in the Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The most productive journals are the Jordan Medical Journal, Saudi Medical Journal and Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal with more than 200 publications.
