Dr Sumaira Baba, Shabir Ahmad Ganaie

Abstract

Academic libraries have been and will continue to be the nucleus of higher education by enhancing its worth. The main aim of such library is to serve the needs of its users (teachers, students etc). However, the collection (text /reference books on various subjects, journals, maps, atlases, collections on microfilms, CD, audio-visual aids etc.) shown drastic changes from time to time, reflecting the temper and needs of users in the present situation (competition). Even, there have been tremendous transformations in the fields of higher education, majorly due to the influence of technology (information) to boost its practical effectiveness. As a result, academic libraries require to become more diversified in nature, in both (printed as well as electronic) formats of information. Infact, many of the past studies on readership patterns have indicated increased acceptance towards electronic/online forms of collection. On the other hand, colleges have been considered as the main agents of building future generations. Therefore, College library needs to play a pivotal role in achieving this goal by incorporating a balanced and demonstrative collation of resources. Also, proper vigilance on the existing condition of libraries (colleges) need to be done periodically. Hence, the present study attempts to display the resources available in the libraries (college) of Jammu (J) & Kashmir (K).
