Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance of College Students

Abstract


Technological advancements provide an opportunity to communicate with the near and dear ones in the society through social media platforms. The study was carried out to ascertain the impact of social media among students studying in Higher Educational Institutions of Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu State. A sample size of 180 students was selected for this study from the higher educational institutions. Positive impact of social media on academic performance of students was that majority of the respondents feels that the academic forums available in the social media helps them to understand the concepts/topics discussed/taught in the classrooms, easily. Negative impact of social media on academic performance of students was most of them spent more time on social media and get addicted to it which affects their studies. The study found that the gender category has moderated the relationship strength between knowledge level on social media, access level of social media and the academic performance of the students. The study also calculated the interaction effect between the gender category of the students and their academic performance, the access level of social media and the knowledge level on social media. Suggestions were made to the students, faculty and college authorities to control/reduce the usage and utilize the social media for academic excellence.
