Abstract

Cucumis melo belongs to Cucurbitaceae family. It contains high-content of bioflavonoids (quercetin and rutin) and phenolic compounds. It shows various pharmacological activities like anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, anti-helminthic. In this research, the optimization of physico-chemical parameters like effects of different solvents, solvent percentages, pH, extraction time and particle mesh size for the extraction of bioflavanoids from seeds of Cucumis melo have been studied. For the extraction of quercetin, the optimum results were ethyl acetate solvent, 100% solvent, pH 6, 24 h time with 120 mesh size and the concentration was found to be 21 μg/ml. For the extraction of rutin, the optimum results were ethanol solvent, 80% solvent, pH 7, 12 h time with 120 mesh size and the concentration was found to be 23 μg/ml. In the soxhlet extraction process, the bioflavonoid concentrations show finest results at minimum time period. The quercetin and rutin concentrations were found to be 32 and 28 μg/ml at 5 h.
