Chemical Causes of Leukemia

Leukemia was first described by the French physician and surgeon Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie-
Villebeau in 1827. This review talks about Pathologist Rudolf Virchow that gave a more comprehensive
description in 1845. After Virchow saw a high number of white blood cells in a sample of a patient's
blood The deceased leukemia patient was "dirty green-yellow" rather than the normal red. Neumann
concluded from here that a problem in the bone marrow is responsible for the abnormal blood in
leukemia patients. By the 20th century, leukemia was considered a group of diseases rather than a
single disease. By 1947, Boston pathologist Sidney Farber believed from previous experiments that
aminopterin, an imitation of folic acid, might cure leukemia in children. Most children with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia who are examined show signs of improvement in their bone marrow, but none
of them actually recover. However, this led to more experiments. There are many researchers used
Emile J. Frerich Jr. and Emil Frey III Chemotherapy in an attempt to treat leukemia.
