Fluorine Adsorbents in Water. A Compilation

Jose Carlos Becerra Escobedo, Sergio Lucio Becerra Torres

Abstract

Fluorine constitutes 0.08% of the earth crust. This chemical element is found in the air, soil, rock, and water. Fluoride finds industrial application in the production of ceramics, pesticides, aerosol propellants, and refrigerants. Within the field of medicine, fluorides have been employed for several decades in the prevention of dental cavities. Scientific evidence affirms that fluoride is often harmful to health. Water is a very important vector of fluoride, which is why the interaction of people with the referred xenobiotic is favored. Vigilance is required in guarding against the impacts of fluoride. Techniques for the removal of this substance from water bodies of sanitary interest have been established. Low cost and maximum efficiency materials and equipment are sought to reduce the risk of contact to its minimum. The erosion and overexploitation of water bodies, both underground and surface, cause an increase in their concentration of xenobiotics. This phenomenon should compel us to prevent the known disturbances of fluoride, as well as those negative effects that could be known in this regard, through removal processes. In this documentary review work, various results of fluoride removal materials are shown. We recommend continuing to search for materials and/or substances that inspire certainty in the control of the permissible limits of fluoride in water for human consumption.
