Abstract

The present study was objective to determine whether and to what extent Hibiscus sabdariffa (H. S) extract can reduced the genotoxic damage by Cigarette smoking extract on Allium cepa cells. For this purpose, we used onion bulbs were treated with %2 cigarette smoking extract for 12 h, then treated with concentrations 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 mg/ml of H.s extract for other 12 h; while negative control in water and positive control in cigarette smoking extract was used. Our results showed anti-mitotic effect of H.s extract in a concentration dependent manner and concluded a synergistic effects between extract of cigarette and H.s extract, which caused an increased toxicity on cells at all treatments. Cytological observations revealed that all treatments caused mitotic abnormalities but we showed reduction in the number aberrant cells induction by cigarette extract at treatment with conc. 0.01 mg/ml compared with positive control. These results led to conclude that H.s extract have cytotoxic and anti-genotoxic activity at conc. 0.01 mg/ml.
