Abstract

Abstract
Sugarcane production in various regions of the country is affected by different biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the biotic constraints, there are many diseases such as red rot, wilt, grassy shoot, pineapple disease, smut, leaf scald and pokkah boeng disease. Amongst the foliar diseases, the pokkah boeng disease is becoming a major disease of sugarcane. Pokkah boeng is frequently associated with sett rot or stem rot disease as both are caused by the same causal organism that is, Fusarium moniliforme. The pathogen affects the economically valuable stalk tissues. This is an air-borne disease; it is primarily transmitted through the air currents and secondary transmission is through the infected setts, irrigation water, splashed rains and soil. Trichoderma spp. and Chaetomium globosum have been frequently used for biocontrol of aerial pathogen. Microorganism selected for the management of pokkah boeng should be aggressive competitor, well adapted to the agro-ecosystem and may be easily applied under field conditions. The selected bioagent enhances or maintains already existing defense mechanisms operating in the environment. Inhibitory effect on the growth of F. moniliforme was studied with five biocontrol agents viz., Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma hamatum, Trichoderma viride, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. Soil application with bioagents enriched farm yard manure (FYM) in different plots was done before sowing. The data revealed that all the bioagents suppressed the colony growth of F. moniliforme. The suppression of the growth of the pathogen is significantly higher with T. viride and T. harzianum which were at par among themselves. The minimum inhibition was observed in T. hamatum, A. niger and A. flavus. The study also showed that soil application with Trichoderma-enriched FYM gives an additive effect in reducing the incidence of pokkah boeng disease of sugarcane in comparison to those of bioagents alone.
