HINDRANCES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN INDIA: A MINOR STUDY

Abstract


In India, agriculture is primarily responsible for maintaining food and nutrition security. Agriculture's contribution to the country's output fell from 53% in 1950–1951 to 18% in 2019–2020. Roughly 50% of the workforce still makes their living from it. Many hindrances of the agriculture sector in India are lying behind its growth and development. The objective of the study is to evaluate the barriers preventing India's agricultural development to its full potential. Methodology: The study is mainly descriptive in nature, utilising both quantitative and qualitative methods is based on secondary data. Results and Discussion: Agricultural sector contributes approximately 20% of India's GDP employing about 42% of the nation's population. But there are many hindrances lying behind the development of the sector viz. Climatic Change and Sustainability, Small and Fragmented Land Holdings, Lack of Marketing and Storage Facilities, Poor Mechanisation Adoption, Soil Erosion, etc. Findings: India has emerged as a significant participant in the worldwide agricultural industry, exporting and positioning it to adequately supply of food to its expanding populace. Conclusion: Small and marginal farmers, who face the farming problems, make up the bulk of Indian farmers. The government should take action to make it a more lucrative career for rural communities.
