Abstract

Abstract

Twenty two mint germplasm were characterized and evaluated in the Research Field of Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during March 2012 to July 2013 with a view to find out suitable variety for commercial cultivation. Results revealed that 17 accessions produced spreading and only 5 produced erect type plant. Canopy diameter was the highest in MP-4 and the lowest in the accession MP-21. Plant height in the accessions varied significantly and ranged from 25.7 cm (MP-1) to 84.3 cm (MP-6). Stem colour in most accessions were purple. Leaf colour in 9 accessions was dark green, 6 were green and 7 were light green. Length of leaf varied from 3.9–9.9 cm with an average of 7.3 cm. Leaf density in 36% accessions was dense or intermediate and 28% accessions was sparse. Foliage yield (t/ha) varied significantly and ranged from 16.0–30.6 t/ha with an average of 22.0 t/ha. Leaf and stem dry matter was the highest in MP-18 (19.6%) and MP-17 (25.0%), respectively. Only 3 accessions produced bisexual flowers from June to August. Flower colour was mostly white and arranged in single or in clusters. Number of stamen was recorded 4. Length of stamen and style was 2.0 and 4.0 mm, respectively in all accessions. The accessions MP-1, MP-2, MP-3, MP-4, MP-5, MP-8, MP-9 and MP-19 may be considered for further evaluation towards having variety(ies) for commercial cultivation.
