Abstract

Abstract
Study based on ecology, biogeography and geological history of the species Telescopium telescopium (Linnaeus 1758) from Chandipur-on-Sea is the main stay of the present work. The genus though appeared in Late Miocene is monotypic and at present restricted to Indo-West Pacific. The behaviour of the species was observed in different seasons throughout a span of 12 months and size frequency distribution was taken into consideration. Several early postulates regarding the behaviour and ecological preferences of the species Telescopium telescopium (Linnaeus 1758) were revisited under close observation in winter, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon intervals. Comparing with its Late Miocene counterpart, the species is showing a narrow habitat preference and also occupying a narrow biogeographic realm. The low diversity may be the reason for its evolutionary stasis through Upper Miocene to present day context.

Keywords: Ecology, biogeography, Telescopium, epifaunal, morphological stasis.
