Phytochemical Investigation, Safety and Efficacy Evaluation of Calpurnia aurea (ssps): Commonly Used Traditional Medicinal Plant in Ethiopia: A Compressive Review

Abstract


In Ethiopia, Calpurnia aurea (digita), a traditional medicinal plant is used for the treatment of syphilis, malaria, rabies, diabetes, hypertension, diarrhoea, leishmaniasis, trachoma, elephantiasis, fungal diseases and different other ailment of human and animals. It is important to find a scientific evidence for the traditional use and standardization of the medicinal plant to ensure safety, efficacy and quality through preliminary phytochemical screening, analysis, safety and efficacy studies. Based on this review, scientific studies conducted on Calpurnia aurea—a traditional medicinal plant found in Ethiopia—revealed that the leaves, bark, seed and root of the plant have potential medicinal values for various diseases and validate its traditional uses. Further studies of detailed phytochemical screening, further isolations and characterizations of each active ingredients is required to identify the exact chemical compound (s) responsible for the activities observed from the present studies for development of potential new drugs and applications in pharmaceutical industry. It is also important to conduct clinical trial in human subject to incorporate the medicinal plant to modern healthcare system and for standardization.
