A Comparative Clinical Trial of Three Different Dosage form of Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia Willd.) in Ekakustha (Psoriasis)

Abstract


Introduction: Ekakushtha is a type of Kshudra Kushtha (minor skin disease) resembling psoriasis in its clinical manifestations. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia Willd.) is mentioned very effective in treatment of all type Kushtha in classics with different dosage forms like Ghana (aqueous extract), Churna (powder drug), Ghrita, hydro alcoholic extract and many more. Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of three different dosage form of Guduchi i.e. Guduchi Ghana prepared from Guduchi Swarasa, Swarasa Bhavita Guduchi Churna and hydro alcoholic extract of Guduchi in Ekakushtha (Psoriasis). Methods: In this randomized double blind clinical trial, total 54 selected patients were randomly divided into three groups using computer generated randomization in which total 45 patients were completed the treatment with the dose (4 Capsules of 500 mg 3 time per day before meal) schedule of internal application with duration of 4 weeks. The assessment was done based on the symptoms of the disease; PASI score and DLQI score every week. Results: Swarasa Bhavita Guduchi Churna had a considerable reduction in subjective parameters compare to other two groups (1.33+0.31 vs. 3.00+0.29, p<0.001). Total PASI and DLQI score significantly improved in Swarasa Bhavita Guduchi Churna in comparison to other two groups (11.28+1.53 vs. 13.93+1.61, p<0.05) and (18.86+0.90 vs. 20.93+0.67, p<0.05) respectively. No negative drug reactions were observed throughout the course of the study. Conclusion: Swarasa Bhavita Guduchi Churna is more effective compare to other two dosage form Guduchi.
