Abstract

In Unani system of medicine, Isqate Hamal is defined as a process in which the foetus is expelled out from the uterus before viability. During abortion, the women experience same events as at the time of delivery. The duration of pregnancy is usually 9 months and 12 days. Abortion can occur at any time of gestation starting from implantation to 20 weeks of gestation. Abortion is classified as early and late trimester, but in recurrent pregnancy loss, usually abortions occur after few weeks of implantation. According to Unani concept, if Nutfa (zygote) is formed from abnormal semen, then Isqat occurs in early weeks of gestation. Sometimes abortion occurs after 3 months of conception, which is due to diseases related to the mother, foetus or placenta. A G6, P5, L0, A5, D0 pregnant woman aged about 22 years with the history of 2 months amenorrhoea came to the Gyn OPD of NIUM Hospital with the complaints of spotting per vagina, lower abdominal pain and backache in the past two days. The patient was admitted on 29/12/2016 and given conventional treatment for the maiantance of pregnancy along with complete bed rest, but spontaneous abortion occurs on next day. After thorough examination, the probable cause in this case was found as Sue Mizaj Rehm. In Unani system of medicine, several herbal drugs are mentioned which are used to prevent abortion like Ashok Chal (Saraka Indica), Zarward (Rose stamen), Mazu (Quercus infectoria), Lodh Pathani (Symplocos racemosa Roxb) etc. which are having the properties of foetuguard, uterine relaxant, astringent, uterine tonic, resolvent and styptic and several compound drugs like Majoon Hamal Ambari, Majoon Hafiz Janee etc. also beneficial in recurrent abortion. Hence proper diagnosis and appropriate administration of these drugs may prevent abortion.
