Lipid Profile and Nutritional Evaluation of Chronic Renal Failure Patients on Hemodialysis in Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh), India

Abstract

There are numerous side-effects of protein-energy malnutrition in undergoing dialysis patients. Protein-energy malnutrition causes morbidity and mortality higher incidence in dialysis patients. To assess the nutritional status and association between assorted factors used for assessing malnutrition, a cross-sectional study was carried out twice time in a week in 35 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Data were recorded three times in every 30 days interval; 87% of patients were male and 13% were female. Data were analysed by using Analysis of variance. Lipid profile, anthropometric measurement (BMI, MUAC), dietary intake of nutrients (energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat) showed significant difference whereas no significant difference (p<0.05) was observed in Rbs value. Malnutrition is a severe health issue mainly observed at end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis. Mortality and morbidity of CKD patients are associated with malnutrition. Reduced serum concentrations of albumin, intake of protein, essential fatty acids, energy and increased blood urea, creatinine and cholesterol have been linked with an increased relative threat of death in undergone hemodialysis patients. These conclusions have heightened consciousness of the significance of nutrition education in patients treated with maintenance dialysis.
