Wrapped Fernandez and Steel's Skewed Laplace Distribution and its Applications in Ornithology

Abstract


In this paper, we introduce a new circular distribution called Wrapped Fernandez and Steel's Skewed Laplace distribution. We obtain explicit form for the density and derive expressions for distribution function, characteristic function and trigonometric moments. Method of maximum likelihood estimation is used for estimation of parameters. The proposed model is also applied to two real life data sets in ornithology and its performance is compared with that of wrapped Laplace distribution. It is established that the Wrapped Fernandez and Steel's Skewed Laplace distribution is comparatively better than Wrapped Laplace distribution in modeling the present data.
