Abstract

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Jamalpur, Bangladesh during 2016-2017 to observe the performance of yield and yield contributing characteristics and genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield contributing characteristics of nine hyacinth bean genotypes i.e. BARI Sheem-1, BARI Sheem-6, BARI Sheem-7, CB Jam-001, CB Jam-002, CB Jam-003, CB Jam-004, CB Jam-005 and CB Jam-006. The Maximum number of pods per plant (579.00) was observed in CB Jam-003 followed by CB Jam-004 (577.38) and minimum (181.00) in BARI Sheem-7. CB Jam-006 and CB Jam-005 gained maximum individual pod weight (15.87 & 15.72 g), respectively whereas, minimum observed in CB Jam-003 (7.28 g). Maximum pod yield per plant (6.77 kg), per plot (27.10 kg) & per hectare (24.84 t) gained from CB Jam-005 followed by CB Jam-004 per plant (6.65 kg), per plot (26.62 kg) & per hectare (24.53 t) and minimum per plant (1.20 kg), per plot (4.79 kg) & per hectare (5.33 t) in BARI Sheem-7. The experimental studies revealed that the significant amount of genetic variability was observed among the genotypes under the study. Genetic parameters in association with correlation study indicated that for selection of superior genotypes primary emphasis should be given on the number of pods per plant, individual pod weight and pod yield per plant. But also some qualitative characters i.e. cooking quality, palatability and consumers’ preference should also be considered.
