Psychological Determinants Affecting Exercise Adherence among Young Adult Females in Pune City

We reside in a society where physical inactivity remains a serious issue, particularly for women. Among individuals who do initiate exercise programs, approximately half of them drop out during the first 6 months, has been stated in several researches. Mostly individuals discontinue their regular exercise whenever they feel pressured to exercise; they start lacking the enjoyment and intrinsic motivation to continue. In this study, 208 female participants completed the survey. Participants were selected in age from 20 to 28 years. Adherence to exercise was determined on the basis of participant’s attendance record with comparison to exercise i.e. physical activity recommendations given by WHO. The outcomesof the present study supported the hypothesis. As compared to adherent females, non-adherent females were more likely to report physique-related and health-related drives for exercising; however, the results also display that adherent females were more likely to show intrinsic motives for exercising. Overall, the results from this study explain that the body-related and health related pressures have the potential to minimize from women’s abilities to persist towards exercise adherence and that the psychological well-being improves with exercise adherence.
