Historical Study on the Development of Some Selected Public Housing Estates in Kano Metropolis, 1964-1984

Mukhtar Habibu Dankullu

Abstract

Kano had a long history of trade, industrial, intellectual and migratory activities. These are among the reasons that made housing very important in the state. The development of public housing estates in metropolitan Kano from 1964 to 1984 created many opportunities for the state and its populace. It aided in reducing housing deficit, revenue generation, effective civil service delivery, job creation among several others. Despite these advantages, there existed no comprehensive study on housing programs and policies by governments as well as individuals in the history of Kano, despite such development in the 20th century. This paper therefore examines the history of the development of housing estates in Kano in the first two Republics. The paper employs both primary and secondary sources to expatiate on the impacts, challenges and suggestions for public housing estates development.
