HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES ON PROVERBS AS A REFLECTION OF MIND AND WISDOM OF BADE PEOPLE

Iyanda Kamoru Ahmed

Abstract

Proverbs as a mark of life identification is a natural gift with every language. While some languages have developed proverbial culture due to the meticulous academic attention they receive, other local languages like Bade have either little, poor or totally lack academic discourse which altogether make their knowledge unexploited This study aimed at examining proverbs as a reflection of mind and wisdom of Bade people. No doubt, proverbial analyses can be ascribed into several thematic fields. In this regard, the paper analyzed Bade proverbs into didactic, aphorical, rhetorical and mythological themes. The data for the research have been selected from the first proverbial text in Bade, published by Abubakar Murima titled “Angarin Miya Ga Bade” (One Hundred Proverbs in Bade,) in 2012. The text contained 100 proverbs out of which 20 items were selected for the purpose of the study. Using metaphor as theoretical template, the study proved that Bade is a symbolic language and hence uses proverbs as visible embodiment of their culture, language, and civilization. The paper also revealed that Bade people utilize proverbs intelligently as tangible concepts of linguistic embellishment.

Key Words: Proverbs, Language, Wisdom, Bade People.
