Abstract

Abstract

A survey was conducted in several mango producing areas in Gangetic West Bengal particularly in the districts of Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia and Midnapur during fruiting season from 2011 to 2013 to observe the infestation of fruit borer or Sulipoka, Deanolis albizonalis (Hampson) in eight folk varieties of mango (Mangifera indica L). In recent years the borer has assumed serious status causing damage to the maximum extent of 43% to the grown up fruits. The borer caused substantial damage when the fruits were medium to full grown size. The infestation of the borer in the folk varieties is also compared with some commercial varieties of mango. From the study it was found that average infestations of fruit borer in commercial varieties are always higher than the infestations in folk varieties. Therefore, it is revealed that D. albizonalis as a major pest is appeared as menace to the production of mango more in commercial than the folk varieties.
