Abstract

Abstract

A study on diversity and distribution of marine macroalgae in three selected inshore reef areas viz., Veraval, Sutrapada and Chorwad of Saurashtra coast of Gujarat state was conducted during 2016-2017. A total of 83 taxa belonging to 44 genera and 30 family representing Chlorophyta (28 taxa), Ochrophyta (18 taxa) and Rhodophyta (37 taxa) were recorded from these sampling sites during the study. Species wise, the highest number of seaweeds was recorded from intertidal areas of Veraval (69taxa) followed by Sutrapada (54taxa) and Chorwad (49taxa).  The Cheney’s ratio of 3.6 indicated a mixed algal flora in this studied area. The highest percentage cover of marine macro algae was recorded in Veraval site (91.90%) and the lowest percentage cover (48.40%) was observed in Chorwad site. This study contributes to the knowledge of inshore marine macroalgae these three reef areas along the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat.
