FT-IR Analysis of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes based PA12/PMMA Nanocomposites
Abstract
Development of new polymer composites for different applications is gaining interest. In this context, the author has synthesized novel blends and its nanocomposites consisting of Polyamide12 (PA12), Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA), functionalized and non-functionalized carbon nanotubes by using melt extrusion, followed by injection molding technique. To understand molecular interaction among the blend components, these composites, namely PA12/PMMA blend and PA12/PMMA/SWCNT, SWCNT-OH, SWCNT-COOH nanocomposites are characterized by infrared spectroscopic (IR) methods. The studies suggested that the molecular interaction exists between amide groups of PA12 (3300, 1700, 1600 cm-1) and ester groups (1720 cm-1)of PMMA. When carbon nanotubes are added, these interactions are further increased by altering the physico-chemical properties of the blends and their nanocomposites.
