The Formation of Digital Libraries from the Traditional One: Digitization of Library Resources—A Challenge in the Indian Scenario

Abstract

Digital library development initiatives have risen considerably in recent years. The development and current status of digital library initiatives in India reflects that the review as well as the transformation of digital libraries in India has come a long way and turned a productive aspect of the society. Library existence does not just depend or mark on the physical form of documents. We are heading towards a society where digital information can replace to a great deal of information based on printed or published documents. However, the mission of library should be to link the past and the present, and therefore help in shaping the future by procuring, preserving and presenting the records of human culture. Sometimes it comprises the integration of emerging technologies. Future library will be digital and should be having the features viz. it should contain all the recorded knowledge online, the record should be distributed and maintained globally, moreover it should be accessible by any person any time anywhere using internet in any language. The idea of digital library is essential and imperative contemporary efforts of digitalization of libraries are aimed at building individual libraries that can replace the existing physical libraries that are burdened by both financial and space constraints. Nevertheless, modern digital library policy is to be able to reach each home where the data can be accessed in electronic libraries and electronic museums around the world by means of web. The present study deals with the readily offered challenges in the Indian context in the process of digitalization of traditional library system.
