Ontology: Boon for Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals in Context with Ranganathan’s Laws

Traditional libraries deal only with print material. Presently, advent of computer has changed look of libraries, i.e., library resources, library services etc. All Libraries are transforming from conventional library to hybrid, digital and virtual libraries. Procurement, collection and organization of e-resources are obligatory for libraries to fulfill users’ demand. Ontology is tool to manage information in various domains, forms and formats as well. It facilitates information browsing in different domains and gives precise retrieval. User’s satisfaction is one of the foundations of effective and successful library service. Ontology directs system and people for the sharing of knowledge. Therefore, ontology is becoming popular among industrialist, academicians and research scholars. In 21st century of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) revolution, information generation rate has increased tremendously. LIS professionals are facing challenge of ‘Information Explosion’. Organization and management of enormous information resources is a burning issue for Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals. ICT has changed the appearance of libraries, i.e., information resources, services, demand as well as duties and functions of LIS professionals. Ontology is the technology adopted by LIS professionals to cater better service. Ontology brings simplicity in information sharing and retrieval. Ranganathan’s law of library science always directs LIS professionals to provide library services extensively. Application of ontology in libraries supports to follow Ranganathan’s law in present digital environment and enable s to cater better services to users.
