Abstract
Very large amounts of data are being generated due to digital technologies and online activities. Traditional database solutions, which were used as intelligent tools to handle small data, are ineffective in handling the present day big data which has the characteristics of high volume, velocity and variety. Big data analytic tools are employed to get useful insights out of big data. There are some open source big data analytic tools which can be used by librarians for various operations and studies in library environment. Some possible areas include user studies, research, bibliometric studies, searching etc.
