Abstract

Iron oxide nanoparticle is a kind of novel functional material, which has been used in biotechnology and catalysis. In this study, the iron oxide nanoparticle was synthesized by self-assembly method and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and AFM analyses. The synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles were used for the catalytic degradation of a synthetic dye, Direct Red 7 (DR7). Iron oxide nanoparticles with H2O2 degraded the dye more effectively when compared to ferrous sulphate with H2O2 system. The percentage dye decolourisation was estimated from the UV-visible data. COD analysis was performed to assess the percentage dye degradation. The synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles yielded 100% decolourisation and 75% degradation
