Control the Air Pollutants by Chemical Methods

Vidisha Kumari, Manish Srivastava

Abstract

Air pollution is increasing very rapidly nowadays. It has affected the life of all the living organisms in various forms. One such reason can also be termed as air pollutant. This problem cannot be resolved only by controlling the air pollutants through its various sources but by also treating the existing air pollutants through effective methods. Thus, this review paper deals with the control of air pollutants by one such method which is: “Chemical Control of Air Pollutants.” The review paper enlightens about the types and sources of air pollutants, their effect on nature and the air quality indices which measures the level of air pollution in a particular area. Further the chemical treatment of the pollutants starts with the collection and pre-treatment of the air pollutants. This paper describes that the pollutants control can be done chemically by three methods. The first process deals with the chemical processing through non-thermal plasma technique using the plasma reactors for the selective control of pollutants. The use of barium titanate as a catalyst is discussed. Further, nonthermal MnO2 catalyzed decomposition of the HAPs was found that the MnO2 fused nonthermal reactors are highly effective. The second process is used in reducing the pollutants in the coal fired boilers mainly the nitrogen and Sulphur dioxides. The last process is the co-control of the various pollutants and deals with the benefits of this process over the other process. It further discusses the five types of measures to be given emphasis. It concludes that the end of pipe measure does not show the co-control effect at all. Rest four measures are good in the co-control methods.
