Cadmium-induced Lipid Peroxidation and DNA Damage in Sorghum Bicolor Seedlings
Abstract
Abstract
The effect of cadmium (Cd) on lipid peroxidation and DNA damage was studied in a variety of SP18008 Sorghum bicolor seedlings which were exposed to different concentrations of Cd (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μmol/L) heavy metal for two weeks. After two weeks of Cd treatment, Lipid peroxidation was increased in the form of MDA content along with increased concentration of Cd whereas increased DNA damage was also observed in roots of Cd-treated sorghum along with increase in concentration. The higher concentration such as 75 and 100 μmol/L of Cd shows highest lipid peroxidation and the extent of DNA damage. The increase may be, however, associated with necrotic and apoptotic DNA fragmentation, as the affected plants had inhibited growth and distorted yellowish leaves.
