Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of two organic fertilizers on the growth, development, nutrient status and yield of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) The experiment was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three treatments (Poultry manure, Cow dung and control) and were replicated twice. The findings of this study indicate significant differences (P<0.05) in response to the different organic fertilizers applied. Hence, the growth and yield parameters as well as the proximate composition and nutrient/elemental were also analyzed. The outcomes varied with genotype and organic manure application, with the highest values recorded in the poultry manure treatment and the lowest with control. The proximate composition also exhibited certain variations in genotype and organic manure application. Radish grown-in cow dung treatment was highest in moisture content, and crude fibre, while radish grown-in poultry manure treatment was highest in ash content, protein content, carbohydrate and energy. Radish with cow dung treatment had the highest content in iron, manganese, phosphorus, calcium and zinc while calcium and potassium had equal values in poultry manure and cow dung treatments. In conclusion, results of this experiment indicated that the best organic manure that can be used as a medium for sowing is poultry manure due to its outstanding effect to growth and development of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) plants.
