Abstract

Abstract

Agriculture water management deals with the administration of a key input to agricultural production and offers to hope that land and water use will be intensified for sustainable agriculture. Scarcity of water resources and growing of competition for water, many sectors reduce its availability for irrigation. Effective management of water for crop production in water scarce area requires efficient approaches for increasing crop productivity and drought tolerance by genetic improvement and physiological regulation. Concept of modern water management research transpired that most of the supplied water (minimizing of unwanted loss), exchanged water for carbon dioxide more effectively in producing biomass and converts most of the biomass into green or other form of harvestable product, became priority factors. Many technologies to improve water productivity and the management of scarce water resource are available now-a-days. Amongst the most promising and efficient proven techniques were as follows: limited supplemental irrigation for optimizing the use, and water harvesting for improved farm income in drier environment as well as improving water productivity. However, it required exploiting not only water management but also other inputs such as improved cultivars, fertility management and cultural practices which influenced crop yield and sustainability, significantly.
